Siu To: The Legend

When I first embarked on this green onion cake odyssey, all roads seemed to lead to Siu To.  Here I was, moments from meeting him.  With my notebook and iPhone on the ready, I found a table in the courtyard outside of Zenari’s in Manulife Place and waited for him to be a no-show.

After all, who the hell am I?

Edmonton is a really, really BIG small town

I suppose I should start with how it came to be that the object of my search ended up calling me (for more on why I was looking for him see here). To be fair, I had never tried all that hard to find Siu. A couple googles and I was spent! Looking for a “celebrity” might prove tricky, but last week I happened to find myself driving through Chinatown when it occurred to me to stop in at the last known restaurant Mr. To had been associated with: Noodlemaker. EGOC Review: XIX

Our next entry into the green onion cakes odyssey takes us to XIX (Nineteen) in Terwillegar.

To say that I was excited to try the green onion cakes here would be an understatement.  Chef Andrew Fung had created a Charred Albacore tuna “taco” where the “taco” was actually a green onion cake!! WHAT!??!

As I already knew what I was having, I sat impatiently as I watched my girlfriends hum and haw over the menu.  Chicks are the worst.  Finally, decisions were made!

All I want for Christmas is Green Onion Cakes

I made the mistake of spending the holidays in Florida once. The fake icicles and cotton ball snowscapes were a real buzzkill. I will never make that mistake again. Christmas in Edmonton or BUST! The family diaspora assembles for 7 sleepless nights full of food and debauchery. Bedtimes are scrapped and replaced with Lord of the Flies style parenting.

Anyone who has had occasion to spend one with our family would no doubt agree that we really throw down. There’s always a couple of strays (peeps with no place to be) to keep things interesting and for the past several years some new grandkids to add to the chaos. Continue reading

EGOC Review: Dumplings The Restaurant

Thanks for tuning in on our hunt to find the best green onion cakes in Edmonton. Next up: Dumplings The Restaurant located just off the Henday along 91st street.

I have to say that the fact that this place has the words “The Restaurant” in their name, really set things off on the right foot for me. Their specialty is Szechuan, a type of cuisine originating from Sichuan province in southwestern China. Technically green onion cakes are not native to the area, but being an Edmonton restaurant, well… you know.

To The EGOC Naysayers…

Sometimes, when I bring up the notion that green onion cakes are an Edmonton thing, people get really worked up.   I hear things about the fact that this obviously Asian export cannot be ours because, well, it is Asian.  One guy told me: “It’s Cong You Bing motherf***er!”  I’ve also heard things like: “I’ve had one in Vancouver, so it’s clearly not an Etown thing.”
